Sometimes, the processes seen in the "Frost Heave" take an interesting turn. When the air is far colder than the ground, the moisture is, like the rocks, kicked out...
This is not much different than the steam rising from hot water in a cool room. The difference here, is that the vapour is immediately frozen on expulsion, creating the fog of crystals above. The rock was a solid pushed from a freezing liquid, where this ice was a liquid-come-vapour-come-solid pushed from a relatively warm liquid. If not for such processes, life would not be what it is on this Earth.
