Metaphor relies on familiarity. Too much familiarity may even kill the metaphor. This list of real-world metaphors are so commonly used that many of them have been accepted by the regular English language, making them officially "dead metaphors". Why are so many metaphors of space, time, energy and matter declared dead? The answer is simple: we are most familiar with our senses, and what our senses detect. When you're finished reading the list below, have a look at the list of sensory metaphors

See if you've ever used any of the metaphors from this list. You'll find that you use metaphors every day!

About This Site

This website is dedicated to the proposal that the metaphorical relationships drawn between any two disciplines are, in fact, universal, being isomorphic mathematical derivations of the Unified Field Theory. Further, that this symmetric aspect of metaphor is extrapolatable both linearly and laterally, thus may be harnessed to mathematically predict missing knowledge and invention in all other disciplines: an interdisciplinary Rosetta stone of universal scope.

"The metaphor reminds us that the universe is full of cousins." - J.D. Casnig
