. PolysemyA very brief definition of "polysemy". A polyseme is a word or phrase with multiple, related meanings all of which share the same roots (etymology). For example, "box" is defined as "a type of tree", "a container", "a seating area" and "to fight with fists". The first three share their roots with pyxos ("box tree") and are therefore polysemes, while the fourth has its own, separate etymology, in no way connected to pyxos, and is therefore not part of the same polysemous group. |
